I am a nationally recognized thought leader on consumer health information strategy and personal health engagement. Through my consulting firm, Participatory Health Consulting, I help organizations create and implement strategies related to digital health technology and personal health engagement.
I have held roles within EY’s Advisory Practice, as the Vice President of Patient and Provider Engagement in Accountable Care Solutions at Aetna, as a senior leader in Kaiser Permanente’s digital strategy group, as well as founding roles in several consulting companies focusing on strategies for using digital technologies effectively in health care.
I am the primary author/editor of Participatory Healthcare: A Person-Centered Approach to Healthcare Transformation, published by CRC press in August of 2016. I am also the primary editor of Engage! Transforming Healthcare through Digital Patient Engagement, published by HIMSS in March, 2013. Engage! was the best-selling book at National HIMSS in 2013 as well as during the 2013-2014 calendar year. It received the “Best Book” award at HIMSS14. I wrote the “Personal Health Engagement” chapter for the Third Edition of Medical Informatics, published in May of 2015 and the “Patient Portals: Enabling Participatory Medicine” chapter for The Journey Never Ends: Technology’s Role in Helping Perfect Health Care Outcomes, published in February 2016.
I’m on the board of the Society for Participatory Medicine (SPM). I recently completed 2-year term as Co-Chair of the National HIMSS Connected Health Committee. Previously I have been a member of the Consumer Empowerment Workgroup (CEWG) of the Health IT Policy Committee (HITPC) of ONC. I also was an active member of the board of the Northern California chapter of HIMSS for many years holding roles including President, Past President, Vice President and Secretary.
